Nice List Including Some New Freeware for Data Recovery of Various Kinds

http://www.filetransit.com/freeware.php?name=Ipod_Recovery - Doesn't seem to be any specific IPod recovery programs that's really freeware here. On the other hand some of the deleted file recovery programs listed here might work.

Winmail Opener

http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener/ - Winmail Opener is a small and simple utility that allows you to view and extract contents of TNEF-encoded messages (infamous winmail.dat). That means if you receive winmail.dat on your e-mail, with Winmail Opener you can view the rich text message contents and attachments embedded into this file.

You may receive winmail.dat files from the senders who are using Microsoft Outlook (97, 2000). Winmail.dat contains all attachments and rich text message, and not all e-mail clients can recognize its format. Winmail Opener is the solution. Winmail Opener features
* Winmail Opener is absolutely free - no nag screens, no ads, no spyware, no time limit.
* Supports RTF message text.
* You can drag-and-drop TNEF-encoded files into Winmail Opener for opening them.
* You can drag-and-drop decoded attachments from Winmail Opener to any location for saving them.
* Allows to operate with embedded attachments with standard system popup menu (Open, Open with, Copy, etc.)
* Supports command line mode for batch decoding.
* The executable has small size and low system requirements.

New to Me Free Excel and Word Password Cracker

http://www.excel-cracker.com/- Ms Word Excel Cracker is a handy tool, designed to recover lost or forgotten passwords for password protected *.xls files created using Microsoft Word, Excel 97 2000 XP 2003 application or any other excel or word-compatible software.

Have you ever used password protected word or excel files? Perhaps you received such kind of files with important data from your business partner by e-mail or may be you keep data in password protected doc or xls files to prevent an illegal access.

If so, then you happened probably to forget or to be incapable to find a password to one of these *.xls, *.doc files. It becomes a more trouble if you need data stored in the file immediately.

This is not a problem any more!

Ms Word Excel Cracker is a completly FREE Software. It contains absolutely NO ADWARE, NO SPYWARE, NO REGISTRATION, NO POPUPS, NO MALWARE or other unwanted software.

Opening Corrupt Excel Files - 2 New Ideas

http://www.jkp-ads.com/articles/CorruptFiles.asp- gives some of the standard methods but includes two I have not seen:
  • "Set calculation to manual( Open Excel, Choose Tools, Options from the menu, click the Calculation tab and choose Manual). Hit OK. Now try to open the file. [I haven't seen this suggestion before].
  • Open the file, but disable macros (assuming you've set macro security to medium: Tools, Macro, security) [I think this can be done by opening Excel in Safe Mode which I have seen before]
  • As soon as you've clicked the disable macros button, press control-pageup or control-pagedown, thus changing sheets. Sometimes the corruption is inside a chart on a specific sheet, changing the sheet to another may prevent a crash, enabling you to copy the otherCsheets." [Tricky nice idea.]

New High Powered Undelete Freeware

http://pandorarecovery.com/- “ Pandora Recovery is a powerful free tool that provides its users an effective way to attempt recovery of permanently deleted files. And that does not mean restoration of a file from Recycle Bin. Pandora Recovery actually recovers files permanently removed from Recycle Bin, files originally deleted using Shift + Delete keys bypassing Recycle Bin and files deleted from DOS prompt.
Pandora Recovery is not a backup tool - it can recover files that have been deleted months before Pandora Recovery was installed. And while the likelihood of successful recovery is negatively affected by the time passed since the deletion of files Pandora Recovery users were able to recover files deleted more than five years after deletion!"

Behind Asterisk Revealor Written in Assembly Language

Try one or more of the following:

* Open and Repair the file.

* Open the file with the Text Recovery converter. (C:\Documents and Settings\...\test.doc)

Suggestion for Way to Fix Corrupt Corrupt PST File

1. Try to import messages from corrupt PST file into Thunderbird and then back into Outlook.

How to Quickly Recover All the Images from a Non-Corrupt PowerPoint File (or any MS Office File I'd Expect)

This is a neat cross-post from a user named the creayonist in an alt.computer.freeware post. See here:http://preview.tinyurl.com/225kq5.
  1. "Open the presentation in OpenOffice
  2. Save in "Open document presentation" ( .odp ) format.
  3. Exit openoffice.
  4. Locate this file in windows explorer ( or whichever file manager you are using ) and rename the file from .odp to .zip.
  5. Now you can use any unzip program to open this file. Look into a sub- folder named "pictures" and extract the images..."
I think this will also work for recovering the images from a word processing document and will work for quickly recovering videos and music from say PowerPoint files, just open them in Open Office Presentation first.

Uploaded Astound 2.0

Gold Disk Astound 2.0 came out in 1995. It was ahead of it's time. It apparently can open and edit PowerPoint 1.0 - 3.0 files (I think PowerPoint 3.0 is part of Office 4.0) but apparently not Powerpoint 95 files. It also seems to be able to load and edit Freelance files version 1.0 - 2.0 and may be other higher versions as well. It's in this group's file directory:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/2857mw
The company that developed the product moved on to focusing on conferencing software. The golddisk.com domain no longer seems to point to the company, so I'm classifying this as abandonware. My name is Paul Pruitt, and my uncle's company, Brock and Company, Inc., along with my name is associated with the license for the software as displayed during install. I take full responsibilities for any legal fallout. I sold the license to Brock and Company, Inc. but I'm sure they are not currently using this 12 year old software.

New PowerPoint Compatible Presentation Program - Try Opening Corrupt PowerPoint FIles Here

Freeware PDF unlocker

http://smtguru.tripod.com/ - is a freeware program that will remove the password and restrictions on any PDF file that you can read. Most commonly used to remove restrictions such as No printing or copy & paste functions. Uses a simple drag and drop method. You do not need to know the "owner" password for this to work. Removes 40 or 128 bit passwords. Works as well as any retail or shareware program you could purchase. Gets me steamed up when others charge for a GUI front end over a freeware engine.

File Corruption and What to Do About It with Lotus WordPro and 123 Files

http://tinyurl.com/2ybq75- Sometimes corrupt files crash the application a number of seconds after opening the file. Because a crash can occur quickly, there may not be time to do a File -> Save or File -> Save As before the crash, especially if the crash is unexpected. This is where LotusScript can help, since it's much faster than manually saving the file.

This document contains a link to a Word Pro document that contains two sample scripts. You can use the scripts to open a file and either save it in Word Pro format, or save it as a Microsoft Word file. For more information, refer to Document #7002671, "Diagnosing and recovering corrupt or damaged files,"
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg27002671- "Files are corrupt or damaged when they display abnormal behavior, produce error messages, and crash or freeze the application or the operating system. The behavior is usually file-specific, with a new file of similar content free of the same symptoms. Damaged files cause either a general protection fault (GPF) or invalid page fault (IVP) error, usually on opening, closing, printing, or saving in Word Pro.

External circumstances can also cause file corruption and damage.

For example, saving Word Pro files to a network using certain Novell 32-bit clients damages all these files beyond recovery. Other factors that cause errors can be hardware or software conflicts, or an incorrectly configured printer driver. It is essential to determine if the problem is limited to only one or very few files, or is a more extensive system problem."

New to Me Disk Imager

SelfImage is capable of making an image file of a hard disk or hard disk partition, and can restore an image back to any drive or partition that doesn't have open files. Useful for making backups. Unlike dd for Windows (or cygwin), SelfImage is capable of creating an image of a partition that is currently in use."

Looking for Problems with CDRs

http://www.vso-software.fr/products/inspector/inspector.php -" VSO-Inspector is a free add-on to report various information about your hardware configuration. Using this freeware, you can check the listed cd and dvd readers and writers connected to your computer, check the firmware used. The details about the media used and the speed supported by a given writer with this media. Also you can scan a burnt media for read errors and be confident about the readability of your fresh backup."

http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/WinSock_XP_Fix/winsockxpfix.html"WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity hasbeen corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It simply reads the encrypted passwords for processing through our servers.
http://www.securitystats.com/tools/hashcrack.php-"The "Golden Rule" of password security is NOT to choose a password that is easily guessable, or one that might be found in a dictionary. The reason for this is that many hacker tools can crack dictionary-based passwords in mere seconds. This web based demonstration shows how truly easy it is to break dictionary based passwords, regardless of the type of encryption algorithm used to encrypt them. Simply paste in an encrypted password value, and then count the seconds it takes to return the password associated with that encrypted value (won't be long...)
Comment - super cool. Based on the next type of project.
http://www.antsight.com/zsl/rainbowcrack/-- "RainbowCrack is a general purpose implementation of Philippe Oechslin's faster time-memory trade-off technique. In short, the RainbowCrack tool is a hash cracker. A traditional brute force cracker try all possible

The idea of time-memory trade-off is to do all cracking time computation in advance and store the result in files so called "rainbow table". It does take a long time to precompute the tables. But once the one time precomputation is finished, a time-memory trade-off cracker can be hundreds of times faster than a brute force cracker, with the help of precomputed tables."

A few tricks about resetting the Domain Admin Password on Windows 2000 Server have been published, but after Microsoft strengthened some security aspects on Windows 2003 Server, those hacks do not work anymore. http://www.jms1.net/nt-unlock.html-Petter Nordahl-Hagen has written a Windows NT/2000 offline password editor. I have been using various versions of this disk for a few years and have had very good results with it. Thank you, Petter! However, the program only resets the password for the MACHINE Administrator account, not the DOMAIN Administrator account. And wouldn't you know it, on a Windows 2000 server which is an Active Directory controller, you CANNOT log into any machine-level account. Which means that resetting the MACHINE Administrator password is pretty much useless. Or so it would seem. It turns out that "Directory Service Recovery Mode" uses the MACHINE-level accounts, since the whole point of this mode is that the AD control databases may be corrupted and you need a way to manually edit them (presumably using some high-priced third-party software package..) I was able to reset the password on the DOMAIN Administrator account using the following procedure:
This http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/network_password_recovery.html-"When you connect to a network share on your LAN or to your .NET Passport account, Windows XP allows you to save your password in order to use it in each time that you connect the remote server. Running a large password file against Windows 2000/XP, shows statistics up to 1200 logins/sec. This means that you could run a commonly used English dictionary with 53 000 words against a server under a minute.
http://www.cqure.net/wp/?page_id=11-SMBProxy is a "Passing The Hash" tool that works as a proxy. It makes it possible to authenticate to a Windows NT4/2000 server by only knowing the md4 hash. The theory behind this is pretty old, and I don't take any credit for it. The tools for doing this though, have been quite limited. That's why
I decided to release this proxy, to really demonstrate the magic of "Passing The Hash".

In such cases, AsterWin will not be able to reveal the password. The following applications and OS components don't store the password behind the asterisks: Netscape 6.x (Passwords in the Web page), Dialup and network passwords in Windows 2000 and Windows NT/2000/XP user management tools."

http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/123pwdrec_setup.html-"Most applications allow you to store their passwords, such as the password of your dial-in ISP, the password of your email client or FTP tool. Once the password is stored, it is hidden under a row of asterisks and can not be read by you again, e. g. in the case you forget your password. Now, this nifty utility allows you to read any of your passwords that are covered by the asterisks by simply dragging the 007 special cursor over such a password field. Once the 007 cursor is on top of a; password field, the 007 Password Recovery utility displays the password instantly on its screen. Won't reveal password in Win 2000/XP dialer." But what happens if we forget that password and need it again for something. We either didn't write it down or forgot where it was written. That's where Password Reveal comes in. Grab the target icon with the mouse button, drop it on the password box and it uncovers the password. Password Reveal works on programs, not Web Pages."
