Google MS Office Viewer - Nice But Apparently Does Not Work with Windows 8

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-office-viewer/
"Chrome Office Viewer (beta) is a speedy, more secure way to view Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in your browser with a single click.
To open Microsoft Office files, you’d typically need to install additional software. With the Chrome Office Viewer (beta) extension, clicking an Office file on the web will open it directly in Chrome – identical to Chrome’s PDF Viewer.
Formats supported:
.doc
.docx
.xls
.xlsx
.ppt
.pptx"
Try opening corrupt Office Files with this and copying the data if they open. Apparently does not work with Windows 8. It runs offline too though for non Windows 8 users :-).
