Retrieving the Windows 8 Key

"When Windows 8 machines started hitting shelves without the previously common license key label on the side, it removed the possibility of using those stickers to activate installations on the same computer after recovery or repair. If you’ve been handed a Windows 8 machine and you need to replace the hard drive and get Windows 8 installed and activated again, here’s a simple process to get the system back up and activated again.
There have been workarounds before Windows 8 if you lost your license sticker or can’t find where you stored your key. Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder has been able to extract keys from Windows 7 and previous operating system versions for some time now. However, the Windows 8 key is now tied to the original machine instead of having the ability to be installed on other machines if that machine bites the dust. So if you’ve been handed a Windows 8 machine for recovery, here’s how to get the key and get it activated again."

Very Nice DIY Recovery Video of Hard Disk Crash - You May not Need a Clean Room or Hood After All

"Does your hard drive make a buzzing noise when you turn it on? Or does it make clicking noises or not spin up? Well, in this video I will show you how to fix this fairly common problem which is caused by the drive's heads getting stuck on the platters.

Want to be extra safe? You can build a clean air enclosure. Here's a video all about that:

I thought you needed a clean room or hood before this video but apparently not. The presenter has made another video showing how make a homemade clean box. I actually tried this once with a cousin's hard drive. I failed but if I had seen this video and maybe spun the platters while parking the arm (if that was the problem) maybe I would have succeeded. I don't remember what the issue was.

Solution to Data Being Recoverable From Android Phones

"The Solution: Encrypt Then Wipe
The iOS operating system on Apple iPhones and iPads has to deal with a similar problem. To ensure a user’s data can be quickly and completely wiped when the device is factory reset, it has a trick up its sleeve. All data on the device is encrypted by default using the hardware encryption feature. When you choose to set up encryption, the device is protected with your own encryption key. Even if you never set up encryption, the files are stored on the device in encrypted form so any bits of deleted files appear as random gibberish on the device’s storage after it’s reset. The data can’t be recovered.
Android won’t automatically do this for you, but you can do it for yourself. To do this, just encrypt your device’s storage before you perform a factory reset. Open the Settings app, tap Security, and tap Encrypt phone or Encrypt tablet to encrypt your device. This will take an hour or more, depending on how much data your device has on it. Afterwards, open the Settings app, tap Backup & reset, and tap Factory data reset to wipe the device normally. The device will be wiped. Any bits of leftover files will be encrypted, so they’ll appear as random gibberish and their data can’t be recovered.
If your device’s storage is already encrypted, you can just factory reset it...
This is a problem with Android, but it can be easily bypassed by encrypting your device’s storage before wiping it. Google will hopefully fix the problem in the future by making Android’s factory reset feature more comprehensive.
Until then, just remember: encrypt and then reset."

Fascinating Article About How Avast was Able to Recover Vast Amounts of Data from Phones it Purchased From eBay

"Introduction to Android forensics (aka CSI: Android)
Digital forensics is a branch of science which deals with the recovery and investigation of materials found in digital devices. Forensics is usually mentioned in connection with crime, vaguely similar to criminal investigations on TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and NCIS. However, several experiments (1, 2), including this one, use methods of digital forensics as proof that people do not pay attention to what happens with their personal data when replacing their digital devices (computers, hard drives, cell phones). In this blog post series we will reveal what we managed to dig out from supposedly erased devices. The sensitive information includes pictures (even very private ones!), videos, contacts, SMS messages, Facebook chat logs, Google searches, GPS location coordinates, and more.
What happens to the file when it is “deleted”
When people want to delete a file, most will use the standard features that come with their operating system. After it’s done, they consider the unwanted data to be gone forever. However, this is not true. When a file is deleted, the operating system merely deletes the corresponding pointers in the file table and marks the space occupied by the file as free. The reality is that the file is not deleted and the data it contained still remains on the drive. With regular usage of the drive, the remaining data will sooner or later be overwritten with different data. The same thing happens on your PC.
The following screenshots show the scenario. We used the program FTK Imager to mount the image of a partition containing user data. The first figure shows a [root] directory followed by [unallocated space]. Although all the sensitive files were deleted in the regular way, something still remained in unallocated space. In this particular example, we managed to dump 251 blocks of unallocated data and to recover interesting messages, for example from a Facebook chat. The seller of this HTC Sensation cell phone thought that his personal was cleared out, but the figures below show that he/she was tragically mistaken..."
Here are excerpts from the second article:
"Tens of thousands of Americans sell themselves online every day
The Internet has become a virtual flea market, with online consumer-to-consumer sites like Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist selling millions of products every day. Used smartphones are a popular sales item on eBay – more than 80,000 people list their phones for sale each day. It seems like a smart way to make some extra money, but AVAST has found out that many fail to protect their identity in the process.
AVAST recovers an abundance of personal data from used smartphones
Most sellers delete all of their personal data prior to selling their used devices… or so they think. We purchased 20 used Android phones off eBay and used simple and easily available recovery software to restore deleted files. The amount of data we were able to retrieve was astonishing and proves that simply deleting is not enough.
Our analysts found the following:
  • More than 40,000 stored photos
  • More than 1,500 family photos of children
  • More than 750 photos of women in various stages of undress
  • More than 250 selfies of what appear to be the previous owner’s manhood
  • More than 1,000 Google searches
  • More than 750 emails and text messages
  • More than 250 contact names and email addresses
  • Four previous owners’ identities
  • One completed loan application..."

Easy Office Recovery by MunSoft - Free as in Freeware- Only Today from Giveaway of the Day

"Easy Office Recovery by MunSoft is a program for recovering Office documents with ease. The simplicity of the interface and the complicated algorithms together create the most pleasurable data recovery experience for both seasoned and novice users alike.
Easy Office Recovery supports all kinds of Office documents, deleted or damaged and works on Windows."
I personally recommend this program. I find it works very well with corrupt Word files, even the dreaded "Unspecified Error" ones. It does not get a good rating on Giveaway of the Day which might be a reflection of its less attractive interface and the often futile nature of corrupt file recovery. Giveaway of the Day has featured this before but snap it up now. It's useful to have.
